AN AUTOMATON with a clockwork head ratcheted and jabbered at him in Morse, snapping its jagged ceramic talons. A distorted image of his own body warped and hazed in front of him, alien tentacles bursting from its distended stomach. Another image of himself: it was only when the head blew off that he realised it was his brother Rico - sourced from an event which had never in fact taken place and which had spilled into Mega-City files, a year before, from a strange and congruent time-line.
And the woman hit him again.
A rogue Robo-Judge, Number Five - the unit that had played such an important part in the events leading up to Hestia, when he had gone against everything he had been trained for and everything he believed in to lie about its demise - circled for the kill and then fragmented. A Raptaur sliced at him with a hiss.
And the fever inside him was getting worse.
And the woman hit him again.
'Drokk!'
The murderous Burger Barons he had encountered on his trek through the Cursed Earth ferrying vaccine to Mega-City Two attacked in their ridiculous ritual costumes. The effect was only slightly spoilt by the twodimensional Registered Trade Mark symbols floating by their left shoulders. The Sisters of Death, Judge Death's handmaidens, towered over him, crawling with sickly flickering electrical discharge.
And a nausea sliced up from the pit of his stomach.
And the fever inside him was getting worse.
And the woman hit him again.
He felt himself vomit and it tasted of blood and chemicals.
And the woman hit him again.
He couldn't anticipate her.
And the woman hit him again.
His other senses, the senses which, had he been in darkness, would have been able to pinpoint her and follow her movements, were drowned out in the chaos of vision. There was no way to deactivate his cybernetic eyes.
And the woman hit him again.
Dredd pressed his shaking hands to his eyes.
Gouged into them, hooked his fingers in the sockets.
Ripped the eyes from his head.
